Foreign Military Base Closure

Abstract.

Military bases are a necessary part of human existence as every nation has a right to defend and protect its borders. The right to a safe and secure state is fundamental to human happiness. To paraphrase Thomas Hobbes, humanity is doomed to an existence that is “solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short” in which it cannot enjoy the fruits of its labors without real security.

However, in the world today, there are currently over 800 military bases located on foreign soil. To what extent, if any, does the right to a secure nation extend to foreign soil? The economic costs alone of keeping and maintaining these bases is in the trillions of dollars, not to mention the social and political ones.

In light of the current global political realities and the very real economic crisis, should the Eurasian Conference vote on the continued existence of foreign military bases?

The choice before the conference:
A. Yes, the Eurasian Conference should ban foreign military bases.
B. No, the Eurasian Conference should not ban foreign military bases.
